Let’s Unite To End Corporate Political Donations
Our mission is to empower people to become political consumers so we can end – or at least slow down – corporate political donations. Corporations earn profits off of your everyday purchases–and some of those profits are then donated to politicians and causes you might not agree with.
Goods Unite Us fixes this problem for you in two ways:
- When you’re out and about, our app allows you to search through our database of thousands of companies and brands to instantly uncover their political affiliations; or
- If you’re progressive, you can just shop on our website and avoid companies that donate to Republican politicians and PACs altogether! The companies we feature on our website either donate overwhelmingly to progressive politicians and PACs or barely put any money into politics at all. Just find what you want to buy on our site, and check out as you normally would on Amazon (with no added fees).
We may not have the power to end corporate political donations completely, but at Goods Unite Us, we’re committed to empowering individuals to effect change through their daily purchases. We know it’s not enough, but this is one small step toward balancing out the out-sized influence of corporations in our political system.
What’s more, the team at Goods Unite Us has pledged to donate 50% of the profits from sales on this website to like-minded politicians and non-profits. So not only will your goods come from companies that either stay out of politics or agree with your beliefs, but shopping on our site will also help fund the fight for better education, environmental protections, universal healthcare, and strong social programs.
At the end of each year, we will post a list of all politicians and organizations that your dollars support.
What we are
Our site is about bringing more accountability and transparency to our political process. According to Congress and our Supreme Court, corporations are people. We hope that if enough citizens shop through Goods Unite Us, more corporations will be incentivized to get out of politics or to support the causes that matter to us. We see this as a way to give real people a louder voice.
What we are not
We are not the police or the government. While we hope the companies on our site will be good corporate citizens, we cannot police their working conditions, sustainability practices, or other practices. We believe that’s the government’s job. And if the right politicians are elected, they will put good, sustainable laws in place and enforce them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Affiliating with a large and trusted e-commerce website like Amazon allows us to provide you with a larger selection of brands and products more quickly and easily. Building our own free-standing e-commerce website from scratch would cost tens of millions of dollars which, at this point, is not feasible. And while Amazon’s products themselves are not included on our site, Amazon and its senior employees do give more to progressive candidates and PACs than to conservatives in about a 2/3 to 1/3 margin.
Are all the companies featured on your site progressive?
No. Some certainly are, but others simply have not made any significant political donations at all. This site is about trying to help consumers make sure their everyday purchases don’t help fund conservative causes.
Why are we giving away half of our profits?
The goal of this site isn’t just to hasten the end of corporate political donations but also to fund the politicians and causes our visitors believe in. To see how we plan to donate our profits, read Our Profits Pledge.
How will we pick our donation recipients?
Soon we’ll create a nine-member independent board to decide where this money goes. If you think you or someone you know would be a good candidate for the board, please email us. If we have more candidates than slots, we’ll put it to a vote and let members of our email list choose the board members. This is about your voice, not ours.
We’ll post the names and credentials of the board members on this page once they’ve been chosen. With the exception of our CEO, no stakeholders or employees of Goods Unite Us will serve on the donation board. The board will have full autonomy in deciding how donations are divvied out and will draw up its own procedures and guidelines.
We will always keep you informed by emailing out summaries of our donations and by posting the names of our donation recipients.
